Chapter 961 - 960: Resigned to Fate
Chapter 961 - 960: Resigned to Fate
Luo Yirui and his companion didn’t dare enter the village. The police were incredibly fast. Just as they were leaving, the police arrived at the village and began tracking them through Dayan village by village.Kids generally have a significant fear of police, thanks to their parents’ warnings. Now Luo Yirui truly resented them; he was tired of being chased.
But alas, he wasn’t his parents—he couldn’t just confront the issue head-on with a fight. He wasn’t capable of that.
All he could do was to press on, feeling aggrieved. But they were now close to Ningjin County, so Luo Yirui and Jing Changle decided to head into the county town.
It was risky, but there was a great chance of getting in touch with their parents. How long could they keep escaping like this?
Having made their decision, they headed straight for Ningjin County, not lingering in the surrounding villages.
Luo Yirui remembered when his mom and Uncle Tian Zhi visited Ningjin County. It was to find Uncle Shi Guang, and a lot seemed to happen afterward.
Ningjin County was a small town. The streets were not very clean, and there were many street vendors calling out for customers—these were mostly people from nearby villages, some earning a living by selling goods and didn’t wait for a market day.
Luo Yirui initially thought he would have to disguise himself again, but upon entering, he saw that the town was a mix of all sorts of people. Walking the streets in ragged clothes, no one gave him a second glance.
Feeling relieved, he and Jing Changle walked down the street, passing sellers of buns and steamed bread, clothing shops, herbal medicine stores, and various types of business family stores.
Jing Changle had been to Beijing and found the scene amusing but not eye-opening.
Only the post office had telephones, and there was a phone booth where people queued to make calls.
They bought four big meat buns from a small stall, each eating two. They enjoyed the food, especially Jing Changle, whose diet was mainly coarse grains, his stomach lacking richness—the meat buns were a delight for him!
"Stick with me and there’ll be meat to eat!" Luo Yirui gestured boldly, exuding confidence.
Jing Changle smirked, "I paid for the buns!"
Luo Yirui replied earnestly, "Don’t mind these details."
Jing Changle: "..."
The two walked and joked, but neither dared to completely let down their guard. Near the post office, it seemed to be the weekend, and there was a long queue waiting by the green phone booth.
"I thought only Beijing was like this," muttered Luo Yirui.
Jing Changle was unfazed, "It’s probably people calling their villages; many come to the county for temp work."
He had considered working in Ningjin County before, hearing it was a lucrative place, but he was young, and the distance was too far, so that idea was shelved.
Unexpectedly, he was now in Ningjin County not for work but on the run... not much of an improvement.
How did he end up escaping with Luo Yirui? It wasn’t really his problem, was it because of Grandpa’s words? Or was it brotherly loyalty to Luo Yirui?
He couldn’t pinpoint the reason, but they ended up escaping together earnestly, and it was quite thrilling.
The two kept vigil near the post office entrance, feeling there wasn’t any immediate danger, planning to leave through a narrow passage when they saw two policemen coming out from the post office!
"Oh no!" Luo Yirui immediately pulled Jing Changle, and they squeezed back into the passage, using nearby shops and passersby as cover.
He couldn’t believe the officers were just hanging around there by coincidence. Why come to the post office otherwise?
Luo Yirui felt a growing frustration—it seemed he couldn’t escape them anywhere. He gritted his teeth, but had to quietly leave the area with Jing Changle.
They dared not freely roam the streets, opting instead for narrow pathways paved with stones, occasionally passing vendors. Life moved slower than in Beijing here.
Noticing dusk approaching, they planned to quickly find a place to stay. Stay at an inn?
Without IDs, and even if they didn’t need them here, if police could stake out phone booths, they could stake out inns too.
"A firewood stack in a village could suffice, but in the county town, where do we go?" pondered Jing Changle.
Luo Yirui was stumped too, having less experience than Jing Changle. Without him, he wouldn’t even know about firewood stacks.
Luckily, it was summer—had it been winter, they would’ve needed a warm place, it seemed they weren’t totally out of luck...
Now, they found simple satisfaction.
Amidst walking, a person hurried past them from a short distance—a worker going home, they thought, but on closer inspection...
Seeing the person, Luo Yirui and Jing Changle exchanged a look, speechless at their unexpected luck; they’d just separated not long ago and already met again.
Yes, it was Hao Rong!
Hao Rong couldn’t keep up appearances anymore; appearing bedraggled, with worn clothes, several scratches on his face and some minor injuries, looking terrified and puzzled.
"Hello, brother, where are you off to?" joked Jing Changle, leaning against a wall as Hao Rong walked by with his head down.
The stone path was narrow already; if they hadn’t leaned against the wall, Hao Rong couldn’t pass without turning sideways.
Hao Rong paused upon hearing the voice, turned to see Jing Changle for a moment, then Luo Yirui. He swallowed hard, glancing back at where he’d come, about to speak when he heard urgent footsteps.
His face turned to panic, "Quickly go, they’re catching up!"
Luo Yirui sighed, having just thought it was lucky not being winter, feeling quite content before being handed a huge problem!
He had been right, Hao Rong’s bodyguards were problematic, jamming all signals to isolate him, the driver likely dead or an ally of the bodyguards.
Those bodyguards had seen him and Jing Changle, and they certainly wouldn’t let them go unnoticed, being witnesses to their real identities.
"Run!" Luo Yirui resigned.
Luo Yirui and Jing Changle dashed past Hao Rong, who stared blankly before quickly following!
Despite being older and seemingly stronger than the two, he might not be able to outrun them.
