Chapter 1138: Are You the Child’s Father?
Chapter 1138: Are You the Child’s Father?
The waiter at the coffee shop brought over the drinks and snacks, and Arthur Sutton gentlemanly placed Janelle Tollman’s share in front of her."You mentioned that coffee keeps you up at night, so I ordered juice for you today."
Janelle accepted the glass with a smile. "Thank you."
Arthur was about to say something when Janelle suddenly received a call from Wayne Archer. "Brother Archer?"
"I didn’t see you at the shop, did you go out for something?"
Hearing this, Janelle peeked towards the perfume shop across the street and saw Wayne Archer standing at the door, calling her.
"...Yes. Did you need something from me?"
After answering, Janelle suddenly felt Wayne look in her direction.
She didn’t know why she felt a bit guilty, and then she saw Wayne turn and walk into the shop, while she heard his voice on the phone: "Didn’t Noah leave his jacket in my car yesterday when we went out? So I brought it along to drop it off at noon, and seeing you’re not in the shop, I called to ask."
"Oh, just leave it at the shop, I’ll be back soon."
"Then I’ll wait for you at the shop, I have something to tell you."
"...Okay."
Given how quiet it was in the shop, their conversation reached Arthur’s ears word for word.
And also, when Wayne accompanied Janelle and her son to the amusement park yesterday, Arthur also "coincidentally" had a "chance meeting" with them there.
So Arthur and Wayne were subtly at odds, both actually aware of each other’s intentions and feeling threatened by the other’s presence.
And with Wayne saying on the phone that he had something to tell Janelle, Arthur couldn’t help but feel worried.
So after Janelle hung up, Arthur asked, "Was it Mr. Archer?"
Janelle, with a slightly embarrassed smile, nodded. "Yes, he’s waiting for me at the shop."
Implying she was about to leave, Arthur understood, but he didn’t let Janelle do as she wished.
He asked, "Is Mr. Archer... also pursuing you?"
Though neither had confirmed anything with her, Janelle suddenly felt like a bad woman playing both sides.
Faced with Arthur’s question, she didn’t lie, nodding and saying, "Yes... but I haven’t thought about rebuilding a family, so I haven’t agreed to him. You know my situation is quite special, and sometimes I’m afraid of changes, unsure if these changes will make life better or worse for me and my child."
Arthur took a sip of coffee, remained silent for a moment, and then asked, "Have you ever thought about finding the child’s father?"
Finally, Arthur proactively steered the topic to the direction that piqued Janelle’s curiosity.
Arthur’s question also struck Janelle as a bit odd.
"...Why would you think it’s the case that I can’t find the child’s father rather than me having divorced?"
Arthur smiled slightly. "Because I know a bit about you."
Janelle didn’t want to miss this opportunity, her expression growing more serious than before. "How much do you know about my past?"
Arthur lowered his eyes, kept silent, and gently placed the cup back on the table. He didn’t know if revealing those secrets would earn Janelle’s forgiveness, and he feared that she would despise him because of it.
Janelle seemed to lack the patience to wait for Arthur’s voluntary confession, her dark eyes intensely locked onto Arthur’s face, asking the question that had been in her heart for so long: "...Is it you? Are you the father of the child?"
