"What do you mean?"
Gu Lingling asked in confusion.
"That old woman getting beaten is Guo Chundan’s mother‑in‑law." The old man shook his head. "She’s a fool."
Back when Wang Xiaoqian was still not Guo Chundan’s wife, she brought that crazy old woman back from the mountains when she was a kid. Wang Xiaoqian herself was an orphan; even though the old woman was a bit slow in the head, at least she was company. The two of them, mother and daughter, had depended on each other all these years.
When she was young, Wang Xiaoqian actually looked pretty decent.
But precisely because she was an orphan and had a crazy old mother, she caught Guo Chundan’s eye. Then he hounded her shamelessly and forced it until he married her.
Of course, when Wang Xiaoqian got married, she had to bring her old mother along.

Over time, for the sake of peace and quiet in their own homes, the neighbors stopped interfering.
What else could they do?
They couldn’t very well make their own families lose all peace just for some neighbor who wasn’t kin or anything.
"Ahhhh..." The crazy old mother was still screaming over there.
"You still dare to scream? I’ll beat you to death." Guo Chundan said viciously, and as he spoke, he kicked the fool again and again.
An old lady, hair already white—how could he bring himself to lay into her like that?
"Stop it." Just then, a woman rushed in from the mouth of the street.
"Wang Xiaoqian’s back, good, good." The folks at the little stalls all let out a sigh of relief.
"Guo Chundan, I’ll fight you to the death!" Wang Xiaoqian shrieked as she charged over. "You beast!"
She rushed up and shoved Guo Chundan away with one push, then wrapped her arms around her old mother. "Ma, Ma, are you okay?"
"Qianqian, my girl, my darling is back." The crazy old mother laughed as she pulled Wang Xiaoqian into her arms. "Qianqian, don’t be afraid, Ma’s here, Ma’s here."
"Ma." Wang Xiaoqian sobbed as she wiped the blood from the corner of the old woman’s mouth, then glared at Guo Chundan with hatred. "Guo Chundan, you beast, I’m divorcing you."
"Divorce?" Guo Chundan slurred, drunk. "I’ll kill you first."
Drinking first thing in the morning—only someone like Guo Chundan would do that.
Wang Xiaoqian clutched her crazy old mother tight, letting Guo Chundan kick her as he pleased.
"Stop!" Gu Lingling, eyes red, rushed over.
"You little bitch, don’t stick your nose in." Guo Chundan hiccupped alcohol, his pair of rat eyes narrowing to slits as he stared at Gu Lingling. "Little girl, you’re pretty fresh‑looking, I just wonder if..."
His hand had just reached out, and the filthy words in his mouth hadn’t even come out yet, when Gu Lingling flipped him over her shoulder in one throw, then followed up with two hard kicks.
In the narrow alley, the sound that came out was like a pig being slaughtered.
It was Guo Chundan’s voice.
"That little girl’s something." The people secretly watching said, "It’s really satisfying. She ought to beat him a few more times, best if he gets scared for life."
So he won’t go on wrecking other people’s lives.
