Chapter 363 - 155: Death Night (5)
He’d thought he was in for a boring competition, but he never expected to skip two rounds and take first place.
But on second thought, Shen Bai realized Feng Zheng’s decision made sense.
After a moment of thought, Shen Bai asked.
"If I sit there, can I watch everyone’s matches?"
Feng Zheng nodded. "Of course. It will be just like the view you had during the first round."
As he spoke, Feng Zheng pointed ahead.
A mirror materialized high in the empty air.
Within the enormous mirror were separate, partitioned areas—the grounds for the matches.
Shen Bai mulled it over for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, no problem."
’There’s still Wang Tianxing, lurking in the shadows and planning to cause trouble during this internal examination.’
’If I participate in the matches, I won’t be able to pay attention to anything else. But sitting up here watching the competition, I might discover some clues.’
’After all, I can observe everything from every angle.’
"Brother Ouyang, Brother Xu, good luck to you both," Shen Bai said.
Ouyang Sword nodded. "Don’t worry. I might not get first place, but I’ll at least get a high rank."
Xu Qian said with a smile, "I wasn’t originally aiming for a particular rank. But Brother Shen, you single-handedly fought a thousand opponents and got me through the first round. Now I have to give the rest of these matches my all."
Shen Bai wished them luck one more time before saying no more. He walked over to the Third Prince, took a seat, and looked down from his high vantage point.
Only then did he realize what a different feeling it was.
The Third Prince greeted Shen Bai, and Shen Bai returned the greeting.
Feng Zheng, meanwhile, had his subordinates begin organizing the drawing of lots for the internal examination participants.
A flurry of activity ensued.
Amid the bustle, the Third Prince struck up a conversation with Shen Bai.
As a member of the Royal Family and one of only three sons of the Emperor of the Great Zhou Country, the Third Prince was naturally a master of social graces, able to converse with Shen Bai in a way that was perfectly pitched.
Every word he spoke was calculated to put his conversation partner at ease.
As Shen Bai and the Third Prince chatted, his gaze fell upon the Prince’s table.
"Your Highness, I don’t recall seeing you with this yesterday. What is it?"
Their brief exchange had brought them a little closer, so Shen Bai felt comfortable asking bluntly.
A wooden box sat quietly on the table. It looked perfectly ordinary, like something you could buy on any street corner.
Shen Bai hadn’t seen the Third Prince with it yesterday. Besides, it was far too common-looking; for the Third Prince to be holding it seemed incongruous with his noble air.
The Third Prince heard him and gestured to the wooden box. "One of my subordinates gave this to me. It’s said that opening it will allow it to block a full-powered strike from a Unity Realm master. But it’s a one-time use item, so it must not be opened."
"Oh?" Shen Bai was intrigued. "May I take a look?"
The Third Prince waved his hand magnanimously. "Please, Brother Shen, be my guest."
Shen Bai took the box, but instead of opening it, he began to examine it closely.
"This isn’t a Deceitful Object, is it? It doesn’t have the aura of one," Shen Bai commented.
The Third Prince nodded. "It’s a treasure. As for how I obtained it... I had Death Night search for it for me a long time ago."
"As you know, Brother Shen, in our position, we face far too many ’accidents’ daily. Members of the Royal Family may appear to lead glamorous lives, but in reality, we are in constant danger."
Although the three Princes scheme against one another, under the implicit command of the Emperor of the Great Zhou Country, they wouldn’t resort to truly underhanded tactics.
However, that doesn’t stop other Demonic Forces from targeting them.
The Wild Taoist Sect, the Wild Buddha Sect, and other Demonic Forces would be overjoyed if one or two of the three Princes were to disappear.
Therefore, it was only natural for the Third Prince to seek out methods of self-protection.
After saying this, the Third Prince seemed to remember something. He pointed to the person behind him and spoke.
"Oh, right. Let me introduce you, Brother Shen. This is the subordinate who gave me this treasure. I call him Death Night. Speaking of which, you could say fate brought the two of us together."
Shen Bai turned to see a masked man in black standing behind them. The man seemed to sense Shen Bai’s gaze.
Death Night gave Shen Bai a slight nod.
Shen Bai asked, curious, "I wonder what kind of fateful encounter Your Highness had with him?"
The Third Prince smiled. "I met Death Night on my way to a city. He didn’t know I was a Prince at the time and we got into a dispute. But after our clash, we discovered we hit it off quite well and ended up drinking and talking merrily."
"Later, I found his background to be clean, so I recruited him as my subordinate."
Shen Bai nodded and placed the wooden box back on the table. "It seems Your Highness is quite fond of making friends from all walks of life."
Of course, this was just a joke. For Princes of the Royal Family, there was no such thing as simply making friends.
The so-called "drinking and talking merrily" was just a pretense for recruiting the man named Death Night as a subordinate.
As the two of them spoke, Death Night stood motionless behind them.
After about the time it takes for a stick of incense to burn, the Observatory members below had all finished drawing their lots.
Feng Zheng stood up and waved toward the nine-story tower before them.
A door on the fourth floor opened. For the participants of the Observatory’s internal examination, such a height was naturally no obstacle.
With his hands clasped behind his back, Feng Zheng said coolly, "Everyone, time is of the essence."
No one hesitated. They leaped up, using all manner of techniques to enter the doorway.
